PLUMSTEAD BASEBALL HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
For some time now, I have been wondering how this league got started. So I've began asking around and out of the blue comes this email message to Greg from the founder of Pinehickon Baseball aka Plumstead Baseball. The following facts have been derived from this email message and I present them to you for your information and enjoyment.
... Bob Steck
Pinehickon Valley Baseball ... the beginnings
Back in 1959, a guy named Bob Shoudt put a team on the field that was simply known as "Pipersville". They played on a field that no longer exists called Stadler's Field in Pipersville. Bob of course, needing a league to play in, started the league then known as the Delaware Valley Midget League. This league, according to Bob, was comprised of teams from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Three years later when 56 boys came out for tryouts, Bob decided it was time to form our own league. The league was called Pinehickon. In 1963, Pinehickon moved to a new field on Deep Run Road named Talley Field.
The league continued to grow when in 1965 Pinehickon Valley had 8 Major teams uniformed and playing baseball. Another 20 boys were participating in the Pony League Program and Pinehickon had a Connie Mack team that Bob now coached.
Somewhere along the line the "official" start of Pinehickon Baseball was said to be 1969. That is the year that was part of the old Pinehickon Logo and it was transferred to the new logo of the league who's name is now officially Plumstead Baseball Association. Bob was "surfing the net" one day and came across our website and decided to contact our current President Greg Arslanian and give him some more detailed background of the league.
We at Plumstead Baseball are grateful to Bob Shoudt and the early volunteers who worked hard to establish our league. We are also appreciative that Bob has taken the time to fill us all in on the real history of Pinehickon Baseball. Thanks Bob!
NOTE: I am collecting photos, old scorecards any printed matter related to Pinehickon Baseball to add to these pages.
